Story: 13-year-old Rynn Jacobs lives alone in a high-class Quebec small town, but unknown to the neighbors, she is leading a secret and dangerous life.

In a little seaside town, thirteen year-old Rynn Jacobs is celebrating her birthday alone on a Halloween night. She and her father had arrived from England recently and leased the house for three years from Mrs. Cora Hallet. Out of the blue, Mrs. Hallets pervert son Frank Hallet visits Rynn and sexually harasses her. Then his mother visits the house and asks for Rynns father. The girl tells her that he traveled to New York. Mrs. Hallet says she needs her jelly glasses that are stored in the cellar and Rynn asks the impolite woman to go. Later ,Mrs. Hallet returns and opens the cellar door despite Rynn. However, the support of the cellar door hits her head and she dies. Rynn tries to get rid of Mrs. Hallets car to hide the evidence but she has trouble starting the car so aspiring magician, Mario Podesta, helps her. Rynn immediately trusts Mario and discloses her secret to him. What is Rynns secret?

Published poet Lester Jacobs has signed a three year lease with wealthy real estate agent Cora Hallet to rent a house in the town of Wells, on the New England coast, the house, which she owns, where he and his thirteen year old daughter, Rynn Jacobs, will live upon moving from England, with the plan being that Rynn will be home schooled. Mrs. Hallet, who has a sense of entitlement in her high standing in town, abuses her landlord position in almost all aspects. One of the worst kept secrets in town among certain circles is that Mrs. Hallets married son, Frank Hallet, preys on girls much like Rynn, Mrs. Hallet who uses her position to keep Frank out of criminal/legal trouble and who will not tolerate any disparaging remarks about him despite knowing the stories about him are true. Unlike Mrs. Hallets expectation of seeing Lester out and about in town, Rynn becomes the face of the Jacobs household to the town, which to some extent works perfectly well for Frank in being able to spend time alone with Rynn without fear of Lester. The way that Lester and Rynn had devised this living situation is a little more difficult than Rynn had anticipated with a few unforeseen circumstances, especially concerning Mrs. Hallet, and thus she takes into her confidence older polio-afflicted teen Mario Podesta, which has its own potential issues in he being the nephew of one of the towns police officers, Ron Miglioriti, in they needing to hide Rynn and Lesters secret from especially the authorities.
