Story: Lisbeth is recovering in a hospital and awaiting trial for three murders when she is released. Mikael must prove her innocence, but Lisbeth must be willing to share the details of her sordid experiences with the court.

Lisbeth Salander is under close supervision in a hospital and is set to face trial for attempted murder on her eventual release. With help from journalist Mikael Blomkvist and his researchers at Millennium magazine, she must prove her innocence. In doing this she plays against powerful enemies and her own past.

Recovering from her wounds in hospital, Lisbeth Salander is also in police custody. At a minimum, she is to be charged with attempted murder but it is soon evident that the forces that had Lisbeth committed to a mental institution at age 12 would like her to be re-committed indefinitely. Mikael Blomkvist meanwhile is preparing a special issue of his magazine, Millennium, dedicated to demanding justice for Lisbeth. He sets out to unmask the conspirators who are clearly prepared to go to great lengths to silence Lisbeth and bury their secret forever.
