Story: A terminally ill man frames himself for murder to allow his family to collect the reward money. After a successful operation, he escapes police custody and searches for the real killer.

Ravi Khanna (Amitabh Bachchan) lives happily with his widowed mother, wheelchair-bound sister (Farida Jalal) and younger brother. He suffers from a terminal brain tumor, and has only 6 months to live. In an effort to provide for his family, he takes the responsibility of a murder that he has not committed to collect the ransom money of Rs. 500,000. He leaves a trail for the police to follow and he is convicted. While in prison he gets an attack and the jail authorities take him to the hospital where he undergoes a successful operation. Now, he is a confessed criminal for abduction, ransom and murder, which he himself planted himself. In order to save himself from the death penalty, he runs away from the hospital in search of the real murderer. He gets help from a thief named Michael (Pran). After many twists and turns, the plot unfolds, where the true identity of the criminal is revealed and Ravi Khanna is a free man.

Employed at a travel agency; Ravi Khanna is the sole bread-winner of his family consisting of his mother, a younger brother and a wheel-chair bound sister, Renu; while he is in love with a young woman named Neelu. On a rainy night when Ravi is unable to get a cab; one of his customers, Surendra Sinha offers him a lift, he alights at a pharmacy only to learn the next day that Surendra is missing and he is called in to give a statement. 6 months later Ravi is approached by an investigating police officer who claims that Surendras dead body have been located and he is asked to provide the police with as much information as possible. Then Ravi gets a head attack on numerous occasions which affect the normal function of his body this then forces him to get a medical check-up done which proves that he is suffering from brain tumor. Finding that he does not have long to live - Ravi frames himself for the murder of Surendra Sinha so that his family can acquire the reward money. The case is called up in a court of law whereby Ravi is sentenced to death but when Ravi undergo a medical operation he is completely cured which forces him to escape from jail in order to try and locate the real killers of Surendra Sinha.
