Story: A party girl is murdered, and everyone at a Utah motel is a suspect.

Near a small Utah town, visiting lawyer David Hewson finds the slashed body of party girl Marcia Morgan, his fellow tenant at Parry Lodge. Sheriff Jess Holmes considers everyone at the motel a suspect, even owner Edmund Parry, a woman hater who is quadriplegic...or is he? While Holmes investigates and the suspects try to hide mutual fears, the killer strikes again...

The upscale Parry Lodge is located in the small tourist town of Kanab, Utah, population 1,200. The lodge is owned by quadriplegic Edmund Parry and his caregiver sister Julia Parry, who has forgone a personal life of her own to take care of him. Edmund is a very bitter man, perhaps because of the reason behind his disability, which some who know him speculate is psychosomatic having to do with a failed relationship. Many people associated with the lodge are at an evening dance being held at Three Lakes, when guest David Hewson, a Los Angeles lawyer on a quick getaway, and Edmunds secretary Beth Dixon, the two having a romantic evening together at the dance, discover the slashed dead body of fellow guest, proverbial vixen Marsha Morgan, next to the lake. Kane County Sheriff Jess Holmes and Judge Ben Walters will have a difficult investigation due to the small nature of the community in all aspects, murders which are not a common occurrence in Kanab. Beyond the Parrys themselves - Edmund whose vitriol toward Marsha and women like Marsha strong - and David, who was supposed to have a date with Marsha earlier that evening, there are many people, guests and locals alike, that had connections to Marsha and thus become people of interest, including Frankie Pierce, a muscle boy working at the lumber mill for the summer, who was known to have dated Marsha, and Los Angeles guest Louise Miles, who is at the lodge with her equally party girl friend Harriet Ames, who is known to have had a thing for Frankie. In those connections, Harriet seems to have attached herself on this trip to fellow guest, actor Norman Grant, who wants to avoid any scandal in trying to revive his flailing career. And shortly after Marshas death, the mysterious Joseph Felton checks into the almost fully booked lodge: coincidence? And while a major break happens when the murder weapon is found by Edmunds drunken employee Joe, who in his drunken state can only provide so much information, David can only view what is happening through a professional lens in that the nature of the murder indicates the killer will strike again, placing especially the young women in and around the lodge at risk.
