In a 15th-century feudal village, a woman is accused of witchcraft and put to death. Her beautiful older daughter knows the real reason for the execution lies in the lords sexual desire for her mother. After confronting the lord on the matter, she, too, is killed. A much younger daughter is spared and taken in by her mothers killers. Once she is of age, as a horrible, deadly plague sweeps the land, she marries the lords worthless son. Then, during a brutal thunderstorm, the older daughter mysteriously reappears and begins to avenge her mothers death.

Framed for witchcraft by the profligate Baron Kurt Humboldt, hapless Adele Karnstein is burned at the stake. As ferocious flames consume Adeles body, she anathematises the name of his evil family for all eternity, putting in danger the lives of her two daughters, Helen and Elisabeth Karnstein. However, several years later, the dead rise from their graves and an appalling doppelgänger walks among the living, hell-bent on revenge. Sooner or later, Adeles prophecy will be fulfilled.
