Episode Info: After Miss America backs out of a scheduled appearance at China Beach, the new Red Cross volunteer, Holly Pelegrino, challenges the nurses on behalf of the Red Cross Volunteers to compete in a Miss China Beach beauty pageant. Meanwhile, McMurphy uses a little guilt and a little blackmail to get K.C. to visit a wounded soldier in the hospital whose face has been badly disfigured in order to boost his morale. Also, Frankie gets assigned to the motor pool and meets the manager Sarge Pepper, a redneck army sergeant not very eager to have her there.

Story: The trials of a weary nurse, her friends and colleagues in a Vietnam War field hospital.

Dateline: November 1967, within klicks of Danang, Vietnam, sits a U.S. Army base, bar and hospital on China Beach. This is the Nam, filled with wounded soldiers and one very lovely but damaged Army Nurse Colleen Mc Murphy. Many heroes, dead and alive, in the forms of nurses, warriors, Donut Dollies, lifeguards, politicians, USO entertainers, Chopper Chicks, doctors, officers and enlisted men, brothers and sisters, Kool-Aid Kids, orderlies, medics, morticians, Army brass and one hostile prostitute named K.C. try to make sense of life and death in between bourbon, bullets and battles.

A drama series set at an American base during the Vietnam War. Rather than focusing on the battle scenes that made up most other portrayals of the war, this show looked at the everyday lives of the people sent to serve their country. The doctors, nurses, soldiers and even USO entertainers stationed at the base must try to come to terms with the horrors and stresses of the war around them. Not all of them succeed.
