Episode Info: While Spartas police chief William O. Bill Gillespie celebrates a mis-trial with Harriet DeLong, they worry about her son Eugene Glendon, who is out on probation. He was tricked into waiting in his friend Byrons car while Byron bought cocaine from dealer Clay Wilson. The crack pusher gang the Crew from Jackson kills both by shooting through the wall. Spartas police investigates and tries to keep the drug pests from spreading from the city. The Crew returns to spread free drug samples, soon causing an OD wave.

Story: The cases and adventures of the police forces in and around Sparta, Mississippi.

Bill Gillespie is a police chief in a small town in the American South, and later becomes sheriff of the county. As Bill tries to solve crimes and catch criminals, aided by his capable investigator Virgil Tibbs and police lieutenant Bubba Skinner, he must navigate tricky small-town politics. Racial tensions often run high in the South and this theme is frequently explored. Bills personal life is often portrayed in this TV drama, as well.

In a continuation of the film of the same name, Virgil Tibbs returns home to Sparta, Mississippi from Philadelphia with his wife Althea for the funeral of his mother when he is offered the position of chief of detectives for the towns mostly Caucasian police force. At first there is tension between not only Virgil and Chief Bill Gillespie, but also between Virgil and Sgt. (and later Captain) Bubba Skinner. However, not only do they learn to work together, but they all eventually become very close friends against the backdrop of the "New South".
