Episode Info: Harassed mother Julia is so disorganised that she brings her children to school on the half-term holiday and makes up an excuse about coming in to report bullying. With no help from her hippie mother Marion or ex-spouse Paul, she aims to be part of a child-minding share-group run by the queenly Amanda, but ends up minding the brood of amiable but slatternly Liz, who cuts off her finger and needs a hospital visit. Finally rejected by Amandas clique, Julia and Liz decide to form their own group with shy househusband Kevin.

Story: This is a programme about navigating the trials and traumas of middle-class motherhood. It looks at the competitive side and unromantic tale on parenting--not the cute, acceptable face of motherhood.

Meet the Alpha Mums, headed by Amanda, very much the queen bee. Everything is organised and sparkling clean; even the kitchen corkboard is a statement of success. At the other end of the spectrum, meet Liz, who is totally chaotic and feels that the kids should enjoy free expression: if they want to do kamikaze jumps off the sofa, she drags a mattress round for safety. Somewhere between Amanda and Liz is Julia. She is organised; as a successful event-organiser, she must be. But when her mother Marion declares that she will no longer be the free childminder and school-run taxi, Julias organisation skills are taxed and nowhere near the level of the Alpha Mums. Also in the mix is Kevin, the stay-at-home dad who, rather than fighing against it, embraces it with gusto--much to the other mums irritation.
