Episode Info: When Axl is suspended for skipping school, Mike decides its time to teach his son a lesson about life and makes him go to work with him at the quarry. But Mikes master plan backfires when Axl likes the job so much that he wants to quit school and lead the life of a quarryman. Meanwhile, Frankie is devastated when she fears that she accidentally prayed away Sues cross-country team after its cut by the school; and while practicing a magic trick, Brick makes the main TV remote disappear - and cant figure out how to make it reappear.

Story: The daily mishaps of a married woman and her semi-dysfunctional family and their attempts to survive life in general in the town of Orson, Indiana.

Following a woman named Frankie, and her boisterous family, the Hecks. Her husband, Mike, her daughter, Sue, and her two sons, Axl, and Brick go on what you might call family adventures as they explore life and its meaning. Mike and Frankie Heck watch their three crazy children grow up into young adults.

The Hecks (mother Frankie, father Mike, sons Axl and Brick, and daughter Sue) are a dysfunctional family without a lot of money, living in a house in disrepair. The parents are frustrated, but during the years the three children grow up and, even with the arguments at home, they are a family that loves each other.
